Innovative Hip System on Display at the 2011 AAOS Annual Meeting

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Zimmer Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: ZMH; SIX: ZMH), a leader in musculoskeletal care, today announced that its Continuum® Acetabular System recently became the Company's best-selling hip construct.  Introduced in late 2009, the Continuum Acetabular System provides surgeons with options to choose the bearing technology that best meets the unique needs of each patient.

The Continuum System leverages the clinical success of a number of Zimmer's technologies.   Continuum Shells are made with Zimmer's proprietary Trabecular Metal™ Technology, a porous metal biomaterial with a three dimensional structure and mechanical characteristics similar to those of cancellous bone.  The outstanding performance of Trabecular Metal Material is supported by over thirteen years of clinical history and more than 100 peer reviewed publications.  The Continuum System's alternative bearing options incorporate Zimmer's Metasul® Metal-on-Metal Articulation technology, supported by more than twenty years of clinical experience, Longevity® Highly Crosslinked Polyethylene, which is highly resistant to wear and aging and is supported by more than ten years of clinical experience, and BIOLOX® delta Ceramic Technology (BIOLOX® delta Ceramic is a trademark of CeramTec AG), which exhibits low wear and high fracture resistance.

"The Continuum System draws upon the clinical success of a number of our leading technology platforms," said Jeff McCaulley, President, Zimmer Reconstructive.  "With a range of sizes and bearing configurations, surgeons are able to customize the system to meet the unique needs of their patients.  We are excited by the progress this system has made in the last year and expect the Continuum System to become a keystone offering in our Hip business."

Zimmer will showcase the Continuum Acetabular System in its exhibit at the 2011 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) annual meeting.  To learn more, visit www.zimmer.com.
